St. Luke's in Bethesda loves these cheese grits that Jessica or Gene make for them the Sunday before Thanksgiving
Gene's customizations: use 2 cups of onion, 1 cup of bread crumbs mixed in with onions and squash, 1 cup sprinkled on top.
Gene didn't like salmon (and he would pronounce the "L" ) but Kathy did, so he found this recipe that made him like it.
Gene emphasized that removing the tenderloin from the oven at 143 F was CRITICAL. Pink is okay! And he'd say you can use Butt Rub instead of the spices the recipe calls for.
The key to great sausage gravy is Stripling's sausage. Do the best you can with what you can get.
When at the infusion center, Gene would get asked "Can I get you anything?" and he'd always answer "A bloody mary." Well, it was either that or a date with Martha Stewart. He thought this was good enough to drink without vodka.
Gene was not on tiktok but still managed to find out about this viral trend to make canned cinnamon rolls so much better.
Recipe TinEats was probably Gene's favorite recipe blog; he had loads of respect for Nagi. Gene would tell you to uncover the wings and leave them in the fridge to dry out for a few hours before dusting them.
The meal Jessica requested everytime she was home; another hit from Nagi @Recipetineats
So good; particularly of interest to people who like the idea of pecan pie but want less goo.
Another one of Jessica's favorite's due to the inclusion of sundried tomatoes; Gene would add more, so you can too if you love them!
Gene took his low country boil show on the road - loved doing it and said 'it's so easy." This recipe is designed to feed a crowd and involves a 7 gallon pot.
Reeves benefited from being close enough to take leftovers home, but Gene wasn't great about labeling things, so often Reeves would pull something out of the freezer in the a.m. to thaw for dinner not knowing what it was. He was THRILLED when he took his first bite of this tasty dinner that makes a lot and freezes well.
Gene trafficked tomatoes home from Tennessee when he would go up for the Hitchcock Family reunion in McMinnville - he thought Tennesssee tomatoes were THE BEST! This is a worthy use of summer time tomatoes. When Jessica made this recipe she COULD NOT with all the steps and pauses and "let cool" and blind baking with beans. It was still quite edible. (Store bought pie crust is fine).
In making Kathy's chocolate chip cookies, Gene noticed that the recipe says "cream the sugar and butter" but no one says what that means. He learned - because he was always researching cooking - that creaming butter takes about 5 minutes. Related, he also really came to love and rely on his pale pink kitchen aid mixer gifted to him by his friend Maury.
A note about shrimp: Gene would tell you that you want them to be C shaped - not Os and not Us - Cs; and he would tell you to be suspicious of any recipe that tells you to cook shrimp for longer than a 3 minutes unless you are trying to make bouncy balls.

Listen and dance, for Gene!
